This piece is a revision of "Fantasia on the Theme of 'Antagatadokosa,'" which won the 29th Asahi Composition Award and was selected as a compulsory piece for the 2019 All Japan Band Competition. It premiered on January 26, 2020, at the 19th Amagasaki Shinbun Band Festival held at the Amashin Archaic Hall in Amagasaki City, Hyogo, Japan, performed by the Kawagoe Sowa Soyukai Wind Orchestra, conducted by Masato Sato.
The work is inspired by the children's song "Antagatadokosa," drawing from its "lyrics" to imagine a fictional story. It begins with a fantasy sounding flute solo, leading into a vibrant first section with pop influences. The middle section is centered around the folk scale (pentatonic) using fragments of the "Antagatadokosa" phrase starting with an oboe solo. It concludes with a recapitulation that further develops motifs from the first half.
The first part of the piece includes sections from the original version that had to be cut due to time constraints for the competition. The second half introduces a new story added for the premiere. Furthermore, this work has been revised for publication to allow performance by smaller ensembles, making some parts optional.
Changes in solos and instrumental substitutions are freely permitted, provided they are musically considered to avoid consecutive solos by the same instrument. Bands are encouraged to enjoy creating their own unique story of "Antagatadokosa," taking a slightly different approach and taste from the competition version.
