This is the second piece in the Ballade for Wind Orchestra series, following the previous work, Poem of Wind and Snow. Commissioned by Bravo Music in 2024.
While the theme of the previous work was "winter," this piece shifts focus to "spring." Japan is one of the few countries in the world where the transition of the seasons can be vividly experienced through all five senses. The emotional changes associated with the seasons are deeply connected to the Japanese sense of aesthetics, influencing countless artistic creations throughout history.
When we think of spring, a tranquil image often comes to mind, exemplified by the saying, "In spring, one sleeps untroubled by dawn..." However, spring is not just a season of calm; it is also a time of renewed life, when countless living things begin to stir and thrive. The term Shunrai (spring thunder) in the title refers to the first claps of thunder that herald the changing season from early spring to early summer, akin to a signal for the awakening of life.
This piece portrays the sky reverberating with spring thunder and focuses on the legendary bird known as the Phoenix (Ko, or Ootori), symbolizing vitality and new beginnings. Through this theme, the work expresses the energy of life and the genesis of all things.
Although the composition does not follow a specific storyline, as the title "Ballade" suggests, it features dramatic developments and a narrative-like quality. Performers are encouraged to let their imagination soar and create their own unique rendition of this ballade.
