Commissioned in 2024 by the Kobe College Wind Orchestra. It premiered worldwide, performed by the same ensemble under the baton of Associate Professor Satoshi Yagisawa. "Cain and Abel" refers to the two brothers born to Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament. The composition is based on the famous episode involving these brothers. Cain, the elder brother, was a farmer, while Abel, the younger brother, was a shepherd. One day, both offered sacrifices to God. However, God showed no interest in Cain's offering of crops and was greatly pleased with Abel's lamb. This angered Cain, and driven by jealousy, he murdered Abel. In response, God imposed a lifelong punishment on Cain, granting him a special mark so that he would live on in suffering and carry the weight of his crime. This famous story has been interpreted in various ways. The composer resonated with the notion that one should not harbor dissatisfaction when their efforts are not recognized (and should not expect reciprocation from others). Dissatisfaction can lead to negative emotions, such as resentment and jealousy, which may ultimately have harmful effects on one's actions. This sentiment became the inspiration for this composition. The piece focuses on the emotional journey of Cain: his daily dedication to farming in an attempt to offer a worthy gift to God, the disappointment of having his offering rejected, the jealousy and murderous intent toward Abel, the realization and regret over his grave sin, and finally, the life he must lead bearing his guilt. These moments are portrayed dramatically throughout the music. With numerous optional parts, the piece is versatile, allowing for performance by small ensembles of at least 11 players up to medium-to-large ensembles of around 35 players. Regardless of the size, the music promises a rich and fulfilling sound. The first players in each part have significant solo opportunities, while the second and third parts are designed to be less technically demanding, ensuring accessibility for performers. For percussion, the piece can be performed with a minimum of two players. In cases of limited personnel, adjustments are suggested: Perc.1 can handle both timpani and snare drum simultaneously, while Perc. 2 can manage tom-tom/hi-hat and bass drum (using a foot pedal).
