"Silaltro Butterfly for Woodwind Octet" was composed in 2023 on commission from the Kushiro Konan High School Wind Orchestra and premiered at the Hokkaido Ensemble Contest in the same year.

When you think of Kushiro, the first thing that likely comes to mind is the "Kushiro Wetland." As Japan's largest wetland, it is designated as a national park and serves as a precious habitat for numerous flora and fauna, including the Japanese crane. Within this national park lies Lake Shirarutoro, and the forest that extends along this lake is known as the "Butterfly Forest," home to over 80 species of butterflies, making it an insect paradise. Inspired by this "Butterfly Forest," I composed this piece to depict the scene of numerous butterflies fluttering through the forest and the rich natural landscapes of the wetland and lake.

The piece begins with the image of a single butterfly appearing out of nowhere. It portrays the butterfly fluttering freely, resting its wings, and the mysterious, graceful, and charming nature of the butterfly.

The probability of a butterfly maturing from an egg to an adult is said to be only 1-2%. Therefore, each butterfly we see is a testament to immense vitality. Although they appear to be fluttering joyfully, for the butterfly, it might be an adventurous flight filled with a sense of speed. The fast sections of the piece express this powerful and dynamic aspect.

For solos such as the flute, it is recommended to play freely, not bound by the tempo, as if a butterfly is fluttering about. The rhythm section should maintain a calm tempo without rushing, ensuring that the articulation remains clear. Even with short notes, aim for a rounded sound that conveys the chords. I hope you will express the scene of butterflies flitting about with supple phrasing and light, lively rhythms.
