The piece "Variazione del Diavolo" (Variations of the Devil) utilizes a theme by Niccolo Paganini, a composer and violin virtuoso famed for his extraordinary technique, rumored to have been acquired through a pact with the devil. This narrative inspired the title, which translates to "Variations of the Devil," reflecting the legendary prowess of Paganini.
Originally arranged from a flute trio, this composition has been developed into an arrangement for saxophone octet, expanding from the previous saxophone quartet version. The transition to an octet allows for a richer, more luxurious sound, adding depth to the music and phrases. Like its predecessors, this piece is highly demanding in terms of technical skill, designed to showcase the diverse timbral qualities unique to the saxophone.
This latest iteration is intended to challenge performers with its complexity while inviting them to explore the saxophone's extensive palette of sounds. The goal is to deliver a performance that not only pays homage to Paganini's virtuosity but also highlights the ensemble's collective capabilities and the individual musicians' technical prowess.
