Skylark and Grebe" was composed at the request of an amateur flutist, a member of a community band in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The premiere performance took place at the requester's wedding reception, performed by the commissioner and spouse, also an amateur flutist.

Given that the bride is from Shiga Prefecture and the groom resides in Ibaraki Prefecture, the title of the piece incorporates the Skylark, the prefectural bird of Ibaraki, and the Grebe, the prefectural bird of Shiga.
