Elegy for Winds was commissioned by Sugao High School Band for the 45th Tokyo High School Ensemble Contest. I had written "Bismuth Psychedelia II" a year earlier, and this time I decided to focus mainly on singing, one of the charms of Sugo High School. The piece has a free variation-like form based on the tenor saxophone melody at the beginning. There are many trills, and you may change the speed of the trills depending on the scene to make them expressive. In the latter half of the piece, the music of various characters intermingles, but it is like a "whirlwind." Please make sure that the volume balance and articulation of each instrument is thoroughly differentiated, and do not neglect even an eighth note. Although there is no special story or compositional background, we hope that people enjoy the tone and melodic expressions so that the music does not end up sounding inorganic. (Takafumi Hikage)
