A major 20th Century influence, Bartok and his colleague Kodaly paid frequent homage to the wonderful folk melodies of their homeland. From a work set for piano, Yo Goto cleverly adapts this vibrant collection to a smaller ensemble (it can be performed with one oboe, two trumpets and two horns) which is further enhanced by the use of full instrumentation. Carefully drawn from the original setting, Goto scores for depth and color.Mr. Goto reminds the conductor to portray the nature and rhythm of each dance movement while imparting a rich sense of imagery. Accentuation and forzando best reveal the dance effect, but carefully control the overall ensemble tutti. Take care to not let active motives rush, and for interest, vary interpretation of repeated lines. Maintain the significance (and balance) of both melody and accompaniment as part assignments shift, making sure that all notes of the melody are supported. Experiment with ways to segue between movements, from long to no pause-this dramatically changes the impression of the whole suite.
