The suite "Between Ebony and Ivory" is a story for young people serialized in the monthly Chopin piano magazine in 2018.
At a performance/narrative concert held in September, 2019. Kazuko Nakayama, the author, read the narration, and I performed a stylized piano duo (four hands) composed for the novel.
I rearranged the piano duo to a flexible work consisting of three short pieces.
I. Two ghosts and strange dance
II. Red Sun Duet
III. Fly ☆ Merry-go-round
The three movements may be performed with, or without pause.
I have re-orchestrated it to form various performing options, from solo/piano accompaniment to small band.
- When performing a flexible quintet and percussion, prioritize in order of part 8, 7, 6 and 9. Observe cue notes (in parenthesis} in part 8.
- When performing with five percussionists, do so with parts 6-9 with
Marimba performed by two percussionists on part 9. Roll on long notes.
Perform thoroughly including cued notes.
-Part 9 can also be performed on piano (organ/mallet percussion). It can be used to cover shortages on specific parts.
- Part 8 as solo and 9 as piano accompaniment can be performed as a duet.
The counterpart in the harmony and tremolo can be omitted.
Range can be adjusted by need to feature various solo instruments.
