This is from an opera made between 1857 and 1858 by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901).Since its story was about actual Swedish royalty, it was initially censored, and other than the music by Verdi, changes were made to setting and characters. It finally premiered in 1859, and was enthusiastically accepted. From this high quality, beautiful music we chose three sections: prelude to the second act, the scene where the fortuneteller Ullika is reading the palms of the sailor, and the chorus part from the first act. Thus arranged into a clarinet quartet.
