Cat's Eye was commissioned by the ensemble "Brass Cats" for brass octet and premiered by the group in January, 2011 at Shiga State Ensemble Contest. The title, Cat's Eye not only came from the commissioners but just like a cat's eye, its style and tempi change dramatically depending on the scene. The form is A-B-A. It starts lightly with 5/4, 4/3, 4/4 and then beginning motives reappear in slow tempi and varied styles. The finale is an enhanced grandioso in a quick, irregular meter.High range or fast technique is not particularly required of any instrument, however, building chord tension and using bell tones are critical ensemble skills. Each performer needs not only to know his/her part but also study the score thoroughly to learn balance and structure and how to deliver the performance with a sense of unity.
