4 Marimbas (4.5-ocvave, 5-octave)
(You can also share two marimbas)
This is a pleasant work for four marimba players (with two marimbas), composed at the request of percussionist Kazuko Ogawa. Marimbacances is derived from "marimba" and "vacation (vacance)". It is one of her commissioning series works featuring marimba.
Professor Ogawa asked me to create a style suitable for the title of "Marine Vacation", but unfortunately I have never really had a vacation experience... After completing graduate school, I went directly to work as a composer. Since then I've worked hard... Fortunately, however, I spent a week in Venice in September 2008 (although half of it was an interview trip), so I made use of that experience. As an aside, that week was a short vacation, but I didn't compose, teach, write manuscripts. Insead I ate well, went for a stroll, shopped and such each morning ... What a joy it was! I have never felt this refreshed before. Through this experience, I was able to compose a cheerful and cute work. In addition, since it was Venice, a city of the sea, which is also called "water city", we added another meaning of "marine" + "vacation" to the title.
The premiere was held in December 2008 by Professor Ogawa and students for the 7th Subscription Concert of the SHOBI College of Music Percussion Ensemble.
