Nightphony for Wind Orchestra was commissioned by the Otsu Symphonic Band for their musical director, Yoichi Morishima. In my opinion, many community bands in the Kansai region perform with a stately, symphonic character compared to those of the Kanto region. OSB is amongst those, so I wrote based upon that idea. This work is focuses on a dialogue between the musical intent of the conductor and that of ensemble, rather than the technical aspects."Nightphony" is a coined word coming from "night" + "phon- (sound)". Just before this work, I wrote a song called "Sound of the Night" for woodwind quintet and piano. This is like a sequel, or the final movement, hense the title.
