The piece opens with a classical/romantic feel, followed by a mixture of emphatic rhythm patterns and styles in the second half, and a coda in the initial style. It combines symphonic motives with African-American rhythmic themes.
The "classical" section evokes Shobi's long, prestigious history. A triple meter Vivace begins in a light French style. A compelling, melodic Adagio follows the Vivace. The beautiful soprano sax solo has a hint of jazz. As bold brass fanfares resonate, the musical momentum intensifies and gains an even more colorful character, like a Debussy symphonic poem.
At mid-point, a percussion entrance radically changes the atmosphere. Polyrhythmic phrases in the woodwinds overlap brass fills as the brass build into a strong a FUNK riff, establishing a groove for soprano sax improvisation. The style then alternates between FUNK and SWING. These alternations present a great opportunity for showmanship. Especially in the SWING section, having a lush "symphonic jazz" sound like the big band/strings effect of later Sinatra.
The end is a repeat of the beginning. A concluding fanfare is offered, heralding Shobi Gakuen's bright future.
