In 2015, I composed and dedicated a work called Une Fantasie de HIRATA to Shinji Furukawa, director of Izumo City Hirata Junior High School Band, for his 60th birthday. The piece included many descriptive elements of places around the former city of Hirata, such as regions of Uppurui, Inome Cave, Hirata festival, etc. The following March, 2016 I was asked by Mr. Furukawa for yet another piece. Hence, this new composition came about.
I thought of composing absolute music this time, but composing it would have taken too much time considering the impending junior high band competition. Completing the work as quickly as possible
and making it available for practice became an important factor. Therefore, I had decided to draw from my "fictitious" works series. What I mean by "fictitious" is that the music depicts an imaginary scene viewed only in my mind. Although I have used the word "Chim?rique" in the title for the past three "fictitious" compositions, I decided not to use it since there is no clear storyline.
What I kept in mind for this composition was a taste of Italian opera from the good old days, and the entire piece is espressivo. You may create your own story if you would like, or you can treat it like absolute music. Whatever approach and interpretation you might have, do not forget that the music is "espressivo" throughout.
