The original was commissioned by the All Japan Band Association for the All Japan Band Competition in 1983. It was a work from my 20's, nearly 40 years ago, an important work that started my career as a composer.
The song title is the name of a dance performed in France in the 18th century.
I envisioned it as an elegant dance style music, and the name was prefixed with quadri which means "4" because four couples dance in a square and the name is the motive for each part to jump four times. Though I thought it was suitable to initiate this work, there is no particularly deep relation to the stylistic aspect of music.
Originally, the piece is not intended for extreme dynamic or special impact. It is suitable for a small ensemble with a limited number of people.
I changed the harmonic structure as the original was written with 7th and 9th chords. It is important to create the right color and variations to produce an ideal sound. To do this, first pay close attention to the tone color and dynamic variation of each part. It will be a musical challenge to correspondingly express that through timbral balance.
In the case of a group with adequate population, it would be interesting to assign a player multiple parts and shift roles to create changes in balance and color.
