Score
Do you know "Ich bin ein Musikante" (I am a Musician)? It is a German children's song about playing all of the band instruments. This fun variations features every section in the band and both advanced and beginning players play important roles (the music does not cue stand-up performance but students may do so if they wish).
The cycle goes through clarinets, trumpets, saxophones, trombones, horns, oboes & bassoons, flutes, euphoniums & tubas, and finally string basses & percussion. Beginners play the melody and advanced players present the variations. For beginners there are only five notes in simple quarter and eighth note rhythms and a very basic melodic line, easily learned by novices. On the other hand, advanced players are more challenged so that they can model for the younger ones.
Rehearsal letters are in both lower case and capital letters. Capital letters are read by beginners and small letters are for advanced players. If you only play capital letters, it becomes a debut piece accompanied by advanced students. If small rehearsal letters are played, it will be a song with section features. In order to connect each part smoothly, some letters may fall in the middle of phrases. Bass clarinet and baritone saxophone are only for advanced players. Double reed parts may be omitted if not present. String bass can also be optional.
This grand piece of 40 score pages thus features all sections at both beginning and advanced levels, a great introduction to full band performance.
