Download set (Score & Parts)
This arrangement is a new style that can be performed with a minimum of 10 parts, consisting of nine parts where one instrument is selected from two options, plus percussion. Of course, it is also possible to include both instruments instead of using just one. Adding optional instruments can create a medium-sized ensemble of 30 to 40 players.
The major difference from a flexible instrumentation setup is that it minimizes volume balance discrepancies between different instrument combinations, making it easier to achieve a well-balanced sound regardless of the chosen players.
This format is recommended for any band but is particularly suitable for smaller ensembles with instrumentation limits.
Other Rules:
Part 3 can be replaced with Flute.
Part 4 can be replaced with Bass Clarinet (In this case, play the Clarinet part one octave higher).
Part 5 (low woodwinds) can be replaced with Bassoon (In this case, the part must be transcribed into C notation).
Part 6 can be replaced with Soprano Saxophone (In this case, use the Trumpet part).
If Part 6 and Part 7 are played by a combination of Trumpet and Saxophone (one each), the arrangement is written to achieve better balance when Trumpet is assigned to Part 6.
Part 9 can be replaced with Euphonium (In this case, use the Trombone part).
Part 9 can also be replaced with Horn (In this case, the part must be transcribed into F notation).
Part 10 can be played on Trombone using the Euphonium part, but be aware that sections with intricate passages may be more challenging.
Part 11 is ideally played by Tuba for volume balance. If only Contrabass is available, adjustments should be made to ensure a solid foundation. This can include adding low woodwinds from Part 5, having the Trombone or Euphonium play the Tuba part, or incorporating Electric Bass or Bass Master.
For the first piece written for this new instrumentation, I composed a bright, overture-like piece. When listening to the completed work, it reminded me of [ a wind rushing across the grasslands, ] which inspired the title. However, there is no specific imagery tied to it.
I hope each performer can bring their interpretation and create a joyful and expressive performance.
