1981 All Japan Band Competition Required Piece. This flexible version was premiered by Tokyo Elements in September of 2018
Collage consists of traditional Japanese folk songs pursuant of "Wa" (authentic Japanese-ness). The original band composition was written experimentally to show that "Wa" can be achieved with Western instruments.
I composed in J-Pentatonic (Type 1/Folk Song Scale), so flexible formation be freely achieved. Depending on the musical range of the instrument, voices can be exchanged up and down, and it can be done in a folksy, ad-lib manner, so there is no discomfort.
The content structure is the same as the original version. The first half has a relaxed nature centered on the "Nanbu Ushioi Uta", and the second half is a dance using "Tsugaru Jongarabushi", "Shonai Obako", and "Nanbu Agari Jinku".
The first half is boldly rubato for a singing effect.
The latter half (dance) requires a divertimento-like precision.
Percussion instruments have very important roles. The use of Shime Daiko and Wadaiko (Kagura Daiko) makes the music even more exciting.
Assign mature players to lead the melodic duet from L to the conclusion.
