Altamira is a cave complex located near the historic town of Santillana del Mar in Cantabria, Spain. The paintings include bison, boar, horses, and handprints drawn between 14- and 36,000 years ago. Altamira was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985 as a key location of the Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain. The cave was sealed airtight 13,000 years ago due to rock-fall until it was discovered in 1879 by a local 12-yo girl. I wonder how the she felt upon seeing the world of cave art. Altamira can no longer be visited, for conservation reasons. I saw replicas of a section at The National Archaeological Museum.
